Chrissi Beach (Gaidouronisi)

Questo Spiaggia d'oro, detta anche Isola degli Asini, è lunga 5 km e larga 1; il suo punto più alto è Kefali and is only 31 m above sea-level. Chrissi is an uninhabited island, with beaches that have rightfully given it the name “Il paradiso“. From the moment you step foot on it, you feel as though you are on an exotic island. The beaches have white and golden sand, at parts coloured pink from crushed seashells that are scattered far and wide. The water is crystalline and translucent with a turquoise hue. Chrissi is home to a large cedar forest, that stretches for more than 85 acres, with large and impressive specimens. The whole island is part of the European Community’s network of protected landscapes of natural beauty – NATURA 2000 e anche tutelata dalla legislazione greca. Nelle rocce vulcaniche che costituiscono una parte dell'isola sono state identificate 49 specie di fossili.

All'epoca dell'Impero bizantino, Chrissi era un importante centro di produzione del sale e della tintura di porpora. Sul lato occidentale dell'isola si trova la chiesa di Agios Nikolaos that is definitely worth a visit; there is also a salt lake, Roman chamber tombs, a lighthouse and the breakwaters of the ancient harbour. Camping is forbidden on the island, as is entering the cedar wood which is fenced off in places. Collecting sand and shells is likewise not allowed. To get to the island, you can catch one of the ferries that run daily from Ierapetra – from mid-May to late October. The journey takes a little over an hour, and the boat comes in a small harbour on the south beach, at Vougiou Mati. Qui si trova una taverna che serve i visitatori affamati. Dal South Beachun sentiero si snoda tra le dune di sabbia e attraversa l'isola, conducendo alle spiagge di Belegrina, Hatzivolakas e Kataprosopo. Il Sabbie d'oro spiaggia, a circa 5 minuti a piedi da South Beach e il porto, è il più popolare su Chrissi.

È un luogo molto attraente, con sabbia bianca e acque poco profonde di colore verde-blu e cristalline. Questa spiaggia è anche semi-organizzata. A est di Belegrina è Kataprosopo. Its name translates to “Face to face” and comes from its location as it lies directly opposite an even smaller islet (Micronisi(circa 35 acri di superficie) che si trova a soli 700 m al largo. Ha ciottoli e acque blu cristalline ed è meno impressionante di quelle della costa settentrionale, che tendono ad attirare un maggior numero di persone. A ovest di Belegrina is a calmer beach – Hatzivolakas. Luogo piuttosto roccioso, ha sabbia bianca e acque turchesi e limpide poco profonde; su ogni lato si estendono gli imponenti cedri che offrono un'ombra naturale al visitatore.
