Nikos Katzantzakis

Nikos Kazantzakis è una delle figure cretesi più conosciute; scrittore, è nato e cresciuto nel 1883 a Heraklion. All'età di 6 anni fu testimone della rivoluzione del 1889 e a 17 anni vide il suo Paese liberato dal giogo turco. In 1908, at 25 years old, he completed his legal studies and was poised to embark upon his career as a politician, before he turned his attention to his first love, writing. From his very first works, there are clear indications of his future substantial literary career. Influenced by Nietzsche, he translated ‘Così parlò Zarathustra’. Then, in 1912-13, he fought in the Guerre balcaniche. Durante il periodo interbellico viaggiò continuamente, producendo importanti libri di viaggio, e iniziò anche la traduzione dell'Odissea.
