Gigilos Peak – Sfakia

Il picco Gigilos, situato nella Montagne Bianche nella regione di Sfakia è considerata una delle cime più incantevoli di tutta l'Europa. The etymology of name “Gigilos” is uncertain but most probably stems from the Greek word for “mucchio di rocce” – girgiros.

Getting to the Gigilos Peak – Sfakia

Da Chania, si segue l'itinerario per Omalos that takes about an hour. Τhe path starts close to the entrance for Gola di Samaria dove è possibile lasciare l'auto. Il dislivello è di 800 m fino alla cima e ha una lunghezza di 4 km. Stimate almeno 4 ore. Alcune parti del Percorso Gigilos fanno parte del sentiero escursionistico E4.

Escursione sul sentiero

Il percorso inizia a Xyloskalo a 1080 metri di altitudine, che prende il nome dalla vecchia scala di legno che consentiva l'accesso negli anni passati prima dell'apertura della pista. Questa sarà la porta d'accesso a uno dei più lunghi pendii di ghiaia di tutta l'Europa. CretaUna sfida per gli escursionisti inesperti che non dovrebbe essere affrontata con leggerezza.

With several treacherous parts and sharp rocks setting the scenery, it is rightly considered one of the hardest peaks in Crete to ascend. Yet one’s enjoyment on reaching the amazing summit is indescribable. Upon arriving at the 1800m point, the spring of Zeus frames the scene on the west, whilst on the south, you get a glimpse of the famous Ellenoseli e la sua sorgente. L'acqua gelida scorre liberamente tutto l'anno e costituisce una sosta rinfrescante, soprattutto nei mesi estivi.

Il terreno inospitale e le condizioni meteorologiche avverse non erano un deterrente per gli abitanti di questa zona negli anni passati. La grotta di Daimonspelio, or “demons cave” is also situated nearby, where legend has it women were dragged into by spirits. This is also the site of an ancient oracle built close to a city that was probably destroyed by the great earthquake of 360/365 AD. The infernal noises audible within the depths of the cave from underground rivers offer a much more likely explanation than spirits. The mountains carry more tales, however, like that of a cave on the northern edge where the sounds of a lyra can be heard – a shepherd ensnared by nymphs. Round and round they dance with their blond hair flying loose, singing all the while and holding in their arms babies as white as sea-foam. Or this is what the legend says anyway!

Proseguendo verso l'alto, il sentiero è ben segnalato e si snoda lungo la montagna, con splendide formazioni rocciose, attraverso stretti sentieri e ripidi pendii. A seconda delle condizioni meteorologiche, l'ultimo tratto rallenta fino a diventare quasi strisciante ed è necessario arrampicarsi per raggiungere la cima. Nelle giornate limpide, la vista sul Mar Libico e sul vasto paesaggio cretese è incredibile.

Anche se Gigilos is not the easiest, it is worth the effort of climbing the sharp peak. The harsh ascent, the joy of reaching the top, and the chance of seeing a nymph – all offer their own excitement!
