Il Kallergi Monastery is located about 4 km northwest of Kastelli, in a verdant hilly area. It was built during the Venetian occupation and is dedicated to Agios Ioannis il Forerunner. It is part of the Monastero di Vidiani sul Altopiano di Lassithi. Kallergi was probably built on the site of an older monastery, the ruins of which are preserved in the nearby church of Prophet Elias.

The monastery was abandoned during the Turkish occupation to be renovated in 1912 by Archimandrite Nikiforos Velivasakis and the nun Evlambia Dolapsaki. After the death of its renovators in 1938 and the destruction of many of its olive groves by fire in 1931, the monastery was abandoned and lay in ruins. Today, the renovation of the Monastery has been undertaken by the association ?Friends of Kallergi Monastery?. The main building has been restored and the Bank has been remodelled. Outside the precinct of the monastery is a newer two-aisled church, dedicated to Agios Georgios e Agios Spyridon.

The monastery is located only 29 km from Heraklion, close to the busy and cosmopolitan touristy town of Hersonissos. Close by you will also find the Acqua Plus waterpark, popular for families with children. A new airport that will serve the city of Heraklionvicino al villaggio di Kastelli has also been established very close. This region of Heraklion is also known for its excellent climate and wine cultivation. On the western side of the plain, visitors will find various wineries where you can learn more about local varieties and traditional techniques. Even though it is so close to the busy coastal area of the prefecture of Heraklion, this is an area unknown to most visitors. The charming villages, quiet pace of life and laid back vibe will suit visitors that prefer to stay away from the crowds.
