Falassarna has been declared one of the best beaches in Europe and one of the most beautiful in the world. In effect, Falassarna is a long stretch of sand that runs on for more than 3 km. The main beach is Pachia Ammos (Deep Sands), it is about 1 kilometre in length and made up of soft white sand and turquoise waters. The whole area has been established as a tourist destination and has all the necessary amenities including sun-beds and umbrellas, facilities for water-sports and courts for beach volleyball. Because of the strong winds in the area, Falasarna is known as an ideal destination for windsurfing-aficionados. Near the beach, visitors will find rooms for rent, tavernas and cafés to make your stay the more comfortable. You will never want to leave!
If you wish to avoid the crowds at Pachia Ammos, you can seek out one of the other less popular strands which are to be found nearby, both to the north and south. They are smaller, rather isolated and without as many facilities; some have pebbles, others sand but all are ideal for “relaxing and lounging by the water”. Watching the sunset at Falassarna is a special event, so if you can try to stay until late in the evening and stay for some dinner afterwards. After dark, beach bars host parties and there is an active nightlife scene in the area during the summer months.
Falassarna and the area surrounding it is part of the EC ecological network Natura 2000. The area is of archaeological interest as well; this was the location of the ancient Greco-Roman city of Falassarna. A severe earthquake in the 4th century AD is said to have lifted the whole area several metres. There is much to see, as the archaeological excavations continue, including ancient tombs, and the ruins of the acropolis. Poseidon, the God of the Sea was worshipped here.
Continuing to explore the west coast, and moving further south, the next beach you come to is that of Kokkina Grema. This beach requires a 4×4 car and good footwear. On the northernmost point of the west coast, we find Laguna di Balos e Gramvousa island, two places worth exploring in full.
