Chemisch Museum van Chania

Het museum is sinds 1996 geopend voor het publiek, op de tweede verdieping van het regionale kantoor van het Algemeen Chemisch Staatslaboratorium.

Het is een representatie van het eerste openbare chemisch laboratorium van Griekenland, dat in 1900 werd opgericht op initiatief van Ioannis Vamvakas.

Je kunt een bezoek brengen aan de bibliotheek, waar oude scheikundeboeken worden bewaard, het kantoor van Professor Vamvakas met zijn portret, en zie ook decreet nr. 143 van 1900 van de Kretenzische staat, ondertekend door prins George, hoge commissaris van Kreta.

Het museum liep grote schade op tijdens Tweede Wereldoorlog and everything that managed to be saved is kept with special care. The laboratory played an important rule in the early 20th century and the publication of several notable studies that became very popular with Greek chemists at the time. One such book, “Het werk van het laboratorium voor volksgezondheid in Chania” was published in 1913 and was the first of its kind.

In the morning, the area is popular with locals and visitors, and it stays busy until late in the night, especially in the summer. The beach is not organized but that doesn’t prevent people from jumping in for a refreshing swim. In the past, swimming was banned due to water pollution but has since been cleared after the construction of a biological cleaning station.
