Stranden van Heraklion

Heraklion is de toegangspoort voor de meeste bezoekers aan het eiland. Tijdens de zomermaanden kunnen de haven en de luchthaven erg druk worden met dagelijkse vluchten vanuit Griekenland en internationale bestemmingen. Er zijn meer dan twee dozijn stranden in de buurt van Heraklion en het is aan te raden om buiten het centrum te gaan om te genieten van het meeste wat het gebied te bieden heeft. Beginnend met de noordwestelijke kant, komt u langs Ammoudara strand, een lange zandige kuststrook, die vrij druk kan worden en populair is bij windsurfers. Tegen de tijd dat u Palaiokastro, heb je de badplaatsen en strandbars en taverna's achter je gelaten. Dit is een intieme baai, die niet georganiseerd is en vooral bezocht wordt door de lokale bevolking. Richting het westen is de kust één eindeloze strook stranden, zodat u kunt kiezen wat het beste bij u past. Na het passeren van de luchthaven en de nederzetting Karteros de stranden van Amnissos, Tobrouken Kokkini Hani bieden zandstranden en de meeste zijn georganiseerd zodat u parasols en ligbedden kunt huren.

De zuidkust is een heel andere wereld en ook hier zijn vele mogelijkheden. Probeer Keratokampos in de Viannos gebied of de badplaats Lendas; Kommos met zijn Minoïsche nederzetting direct aan de kust is een andere uitstekende optie. Natuurlijk kunt u niet voorbijgaan aan Matala met de grotten op de klif, ooit beroemd geworden door de hippies! Voor de meer fervente natuurliefhebbers die op zoek zijn naar afgelegen opties, zijn er tal van stranden van uitzonderlijke schoonheid zonder toegang via de weg om de drukte weg te houden. Deze zijn alleen te voet bereikbaar via een pad of per boot. Sommige van deze stranden liggen aan de uitgangen van de Martsalo en Agiofarango Gorges, en opnieuw aan de Witte en Zwarte stranden van oostelijke Asteroussia.

Heraklion may be the only place on the island that feels more like a city, but that doesn’t mean there are no beaches nearby for you to discover. Reaching the south coast takes only an hour, and can be combined with visits to nearby villages, archeologische plekken en korte wandelingen in de bergen.
