Spiaggia di Kokkini Ammos

Kokkini Ammos spiaggia (significa Sabbia rossa) è una spiaggia isolata raggiungibile solo a piedi. Ha una sabbia rossastra, che le ha dato il nome, e acque turchesi. La spiaggia si trova a sud di Matala sulla costa meridionale di Isola di Creta, nella prefettura di Heraklion. The rocky cliffs that rise to the north have in some parts, fabulous designs cut into them – like the sphinx and various other esoteric symbols. The sculptures are the work of a Belgian artist and have become a characteristic feature of the area. Visitors often will attempt to include their own artworks or artistic designs to the collection. Due to the location and hard access, the beach is not organized but there is often a small café-canteen, built out of stone for drinks. However, it is best to take all you need with you as the canteen is not always open and there are no tavernas or shops nearby. Sometimes there are umbrellas and sunbeds for hire but it is best to bring your own as there is no natural shade. The beach is also open to the strong south winds, which form impressive waves.

Negli anni '60 e '70, Kokkini Ammos era uno dei luoghi preferiti dagli hippy. Oggi rimane una delle mete preferite dai nudisti e non a caso è stata votata come una delle migliori spiagge del mondo dai media internazionali per i naturalisti. La spiaggia è grossomodo divisa in zone adatte ai nudisti e zone per i vestiti, quindi qualunque sia la vostra preferenza potrete godervi appieno il vostro tempo qui. Kokkini Ammos e l'area circostante sono stati inclusi nel Rete ecologica comunitaria Natura 2000: un rifugio protetto della Monaco mediterraneo foca, le tartarughe di mare (Caretta Caretta) e altri animali.

Per raggiungere la spiaggia, è necessario seguire un sentiero che inizia nei pressi di Matala. Il sentiero costiero dura circa mezz'ora e può essere ripido e impegnativo in alcuni punti. Le famiglie con bambini piccoli e quelle con problemi di mobilità potrebbero voler saltare il percorso. Kokkini Ammos o prendere una barca da Matala.
