Kera Monastery – Lassithi

De klooster van Kera Kardiotissa bevindt zich op de bergketen van Dikti en is te vinden langs de weg omhoog naar de Lassithi Plateau. Het ligt op 50 km van Heraklion en is gewijd aan de Maagd Maria, zoals de meeste Kretenzische kloosters.

Het klooster wordt geassocieerd met een legende die op zichzelf al een aantrekkingspool is voor veel gelovigen. Volgens de traditie is het icoon van Panagia Kardiotissa – from which the monastery took its name and is considered miraculous – was stolen three times by the Turks and returned “by itself” three times. The third time the icon was chained to a marble pillar, which was also taken with when it left. The pillar that is mentioned in the legend is found today in the precinct of the monastery and the chain is placed next to the image.

Dit is een heel oud klooster, maar we weten niet precies wanneer en door wie het is gesticht. Het wordt voor het eerst genoemd door de Florentijnse monnik Christopher Buodelmodiin 1415. In zijn oorspronkelijke vorm was het een fort. De ligging aan een van de natuurlijke doorgangen die naar de Lassithi Plateau – which was a centre of revolutionaries – required its fortification. The monastery wall surrounded and protected the temple, the monks’ cells and the communal buildings. However, its old form was altered due to the destruction and fires it suffered during the Turkish occupation. Today, not much remains of the old fortifications, apart from the entrance on the east side of the complex and the basic layout of the monastery buildings.

De Katholikon van het klooster heeft een belangrijke muurschildering die een artistieke creatie is uit de 14e eeuw.

Na de verovering van Kreta door de TurkenHet klooster speelde een belangrijke rol en was een toevluchtsoord voor de revolutionairen, zoals de meeste kloosters op het eiland. Voor deze rol had het klooster ernstige gevolgen en na het uitbreken van de Revolutie In 1821 werd het herhaaldelijk in brand gestoken door de Turken. In de 20e eeuw dreigde het te vervallen door een vermindering van het aantal monniken, maar dankzij de omvorming tot nonnenklooster is het nu nog steeds actief.
