Kolymbari is a seaside village that has witnessed a lot of tourist development in recent years. It is located 24 km from Chania, on the edge of Rodopou peninsula, at the westernmost point of the Bay of Chania. It is a very long beach with both sand and pebbles and it has relatively deep waters. The beach is organized and open to the northerly and westerly winds. This is a great spot for a leisurely walk or dinner with a view, but not as popular for swimming due to the large waves that are formed. Right next to Kolymbari, we find the Monastery of Panagia Odigitrias or Moni Gonias as it is also known. The monastery dates back to the 17th century and played an important role during the struggle of the Cretan people under Ottoman Occupation. There is a beach in front of the monastery that is great for diving and snorkelling.

Kolymbari Beach

The largest part of the Gulf of Chania, starting in Kolymbari until the coastal settlement of Chrysi Akti, has soft sand or small pebbles and is lined with top-rated resorts, hotels and other accommodation options and seaside restaurants. It is one of the busiest and liveliest areas to be in during the summer, that attracts international and domestic visitors. Due to its location, Kolymbari has a more relaxed and laid back vibe than the settlements of Platanias, Agia Marina and Agioi Apostoloi further east. From Kolymbari, you can drive north to the tip of the eastern cape, where the two sheltered bays of Diktenna and Aghios Georgios are located. The area is 45 km from Chania and the path, after the village of Rodopos, is mostly on dirt roads. Another option is to continue driving west towards Kissamos or Kasteli. You will hear both the names “Kissamos” and “Kasteli” to describe the town. These were both ancient sites in the region but Kissamos was added to the name “Kastelli” to differentiate from another Kastelli close to Heraklion. Kissamos attracts visitors for the ferry connection to Balos Lagoon and the island of Gramvousa on the northwestern tip of the island. Falassarna is another majestic beach located near Kissamos that is popular with windsurfers and water sport enthusiasts.
