Only 2.5 km from the city of Chania, Chrissi Akti beach consists of two sandy beaches with clear and shallow waters which are separated by a small hill. This is one of the most popular beaches in the area, and with good reason. Golden Beach (as Chrissi Acti translates to) boats, soft sand, plenty of space and plenty of activities to keep everyone happy.

The west beach is organized with all the amenities: umbrellas, sunbeds, a lifeguard, facilities for water sports, while the eastern beach called Aptera is less organized and less busy. You will also find a volleyball court and a surf club in the area. There are frequent public busses that stop near the beach, making it a very popular choice for locals and tourists that have chosen to stay in the city centre for their holidays.

On the other side of the bay, we find Agioi Apostoloi beach, which is technically a cluster of three bays separated by rocky outcrops. The name, meaning Holy Apostles, comes from a church near the beach on a small hill. You can walk up the hill for a panoramic view of the bays and the surrounding area; the church is very popular during the summer for weddings. The beach is popular and well-organized, with umbrellas, sunbeds and showers – and there is also a lifeguard in one section of the beach. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to water-sports, not to mention the proximity to a tennis court, volleyball court and football fields. A vast park is situated behind the beach, which attracts locals and tourists for their afternoon walk or running session.

If you feel like walking, the distance between Golden Beach and the outskirts of the city centre near Nea Chora, will take 20 minutes or so. A popular camping site is located nearby and the area is full of rental properties, hotels and restaurants, offering ample choice to visitors. During peak season, this area can be quite crowded until late in the evening. Walk to the nearby chapel of Agioi Apostoloi for a magical sunset.
