The most important wine-producing areas of the prefecture of Chania are located in the northwestern part. The “Wine Road” traverses the areas of Kissamos, Kolymbari, Mousouroi and Voukolies, passing through beautiful landscapes and historic sites. Wine-lovers have the opportunity to get to know the modern products of wineries in the Chania area at the Cretan Wine Festival held each year, usually in spring.
The winery of Karavitaki Vineyards is located in Pontikiana in the area of Kolymvari in Chania. It is a modern winery built with stone and wood that has all the modern means of winemaking and bottling. The wines of the estate are produced for the most part in the privately-owned vineyards with a total area of 40 acres. The varieties that are cultivated are Malagouzia, Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo, Grenache Rouge, Sangiovese and Refosco. The winery also uses the varieties Sultanina, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc which are supplied exclusively by cooperating vine growers. The vineyards are cultivated organically, without the use of pesticides and all viticultural work, from pruning and leafing to harvesting, is done manually. The winery is open all year round. There is a possibility of guided tours and wine tasting. Also in the winery, you will see a small distillery for the production of raki in the traditional way and the church of Agios Tryphon, patron saint of vine growers.

In the foothills of the White Mountains, on the road to the Omalos Plateau, you will find the Manousakis vineyards at an altitude of 320-380 m and again a little higher at 550-600 m. They cultivate several varieties of grapes such as the red Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and white Roussane. They also experiment with local varieties such as Vidiano, which they have been growing since 2010. The Manousakis philosophy is quite a simple one: to carefully cultivate their vineyards in order to absorb the unique flavours of the White Mountains, the aromas from local herbs and wild aromatic plants. The winery produces red, rosé, and white bottles. Another label Mazi (white and red) will be introduced to the market that is a collaboration with the Lyrarakis Winery.

The Dourakis Winery is built in the east foothills of the White Mountains, in a fertile region known for its agricultural production and winemaking; as old, as the stone threshing floor and ancient wine-press suggest. Their modern facilities of stone and wood are designed with respectful admiration to Cretan architectural tradition. The vineyards are situated in the area called Alikambos at an altitude above 330 m. The cultivation process is solely organic. Besides their own output, the winery cooperates with new and dynamic wine-makers in the region. Together they produce red, white, rosé, and sweet wines both from international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache Rouge but also from local varieties such as Malvasia, Kotsifali and Romeiko. Visitors have the opportunity to experience a wine tasting in the suitably decorated room on the first floor from where one can also enjoy the magnificent view of the White Mountains.
