Meet Mount Psiloritis (or Mount Ida) the mountain that rises to 2456 m, the highest point on Crete, the place where Zeus was raised, refuge for rebels throughout numerous battles and wars, and the natural home of shepherds and wildlife.
The town of Eleftherna was founded by the Dorians around the 9th century BC and was inhabited up to the early Byzantine years. This is due to its strategic location at an altitude of 380m, crossed by the roads that connected the ancient Cydonia, Knossos and Mount Psiloritis. The findings so far have been discovered in three different positions of the same hill.
Our walk begins from near the village of Voleones as we ascend to Veni monastery, or the monastery of St. Anthony. This is in a spectacular position with a great view northeast towards Mount Psiloritis. In addition, it has a wonderful cave chapel deep into a cliff with holy water that has made it a holy site since the time of the Minoans.
Chromonastiri is a beautiful village built at the foot of Mount Vrysina that has some important Venetian architecture and Byzantine churches. Buildings with Venetian architectural elements are scattered in the village, but the most important building is the so-called Villa Claudio, a magnificent mansion, which has been restored and houses the military museum.
This walk is through the deepest and steepest gorge in the province of Chania, Aradaina gorge. The 138 m deep gorge is ideal not only for walking but for bunjee jumping as well. It starts at the abandoned village of Aradaina and descends into the gorge via on old stone-paved donkey trail. The path zig-zags down the side of the gorge precipitiously.
Gingilos is an awe inspiring mountain that rises to over 2000 m in the fabled White Mountains of Crete and offers a great view of the Samaria gorge. Today, we don't walk down the gorge, but walk up and away from the crowds of people walking in the Samaria gorge.

Idaeon Cave (or Idaeon Andron) is located on the eastern slopes of Mount Psiloritis, on the Nida plateau, about 75 km from Rethymno and only a short walk from where we leave our transport.
