Dia is a small uninhabited island located only 6 miles north of Heraklion city in Crete with picturesque bays, characterized by its barren and rocky landscape. On a clear day, the island is visible from Heraklion, as it would have been in the time of the Minoan kingdom, from the capital of Knossos. Because of this, it was sometimes identified as the island that Theseus escaped to after killing the Minotaur.

Dia is the natural habitat of several protected creatures including the snail Albinaria retusa, the lizard Pdarcis erchardii schiebeli, and the wild rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus cnossius. It also has one of the largest active colonies of the falcon “Mavropetritis” that seeks the isolated rocky cliffs of the island for nesting. Dia is part of the European Network of Nature Natura 2000 and is a protected hunting ground. There are also several protected plants such as the Carlina diae.

About the trip

Choose between a half or a full-day sailing trip to the island of Dia and let the fresh air and warm Meditteranean sun wash the stress away as you prepare for a day of lounging and relaxing at the beach. You will set off from Heraklion Town, swim in the crystal clear waters of the small bays and watch the sunset bathe the Gulf of Heraklion in its golden light.

Options to arrange a private or semi-private sailing tour for a special occasion or romantic excursion are also available.

This will be a unique and memorable experience, to see first-hand the protected national park of Dia island, where only wild goats roam free, and dolphins wander playfully in the water.
