Crete can be thought of as a large island or a small continent. In this section, we have compiled the most useful information for the island of Crete that will prove useful to visitors before – or during – their stay here.

Het klimaat

Crete has an average of 300 days of sunshine a year – one of the best climates in Europe. Overall, the greater part of the island has a temperate Mediterranean climate, although the winter brings snow on the mountains. Broadly speaking, winters in Crete are relatively mild, and spring, autumn and summer are sunny and warm, with summer having the highest temperatures. The period of rainfall is concentrated between autumn until spring, highest at the west of the island, lessening as one goes east. The prevailing winds are westerly; in the summer, a wind from the north, the “meltemi”, can bring a much-appreciated coolness – and ideal conditions for surfing. At the same time, in the summer – and less frequently winter months – the Livas (a southerly wind from the African continent) can bring hot blasts and sand!

Shopping in Crete matches the schedule for Greece generally that is 9:00 am – 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm – 8:30 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 9:00 am – 3:00 pm for the rest of the days, excluding Sunday. However, ‘tourist’ shops may remain open 7 days a week (and even on holidays), sometimes until late at night, especially during the peak summer season.

Hoe kom ik op Kreta?

Kreta is per vliegtuig verbonden met de rest van Griekenland (Egeïsch, Olympisch luchtvervoer, Skyexpress) en per boot (Minoïsche lijnen, Anek Lijnen, Supersnel, Helleense Zeevaart). Het eiland heeft twee internationale luchthavens in Heraklion en Chania en een nationale luchthaven in Sitia met verbindingen naar andere transportknooppunten in Griekenland. Luchthaven Chania ligt op 12 km van de stad Chania en 68 km van de stad Rethymno. De luchthaven van Heraklion ligt op slechts 5 km van de stad Heraklion. Heraklion en 65 km van Agios Nikolaos. Er wordt momenteel een nieuw vliegveld gebouwd in de buurt van Kastelli in Heraklion.

Ook de twee belangrijkste havens van het eiland liggen in Chania en Heraklionmet vier kleinere in Kissamos, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos en Sitia. Tijdens het zomerseizoen (tussen Pasen en eind oktober) zijn er frequente vluchten tussen Kreta en tal van steden binnen en buiten Europa. Voor goedkope vluchten kunnen bezoekers de Ryanair (naar Chania) en Easyjet (Heraklion) routes of zoek online naar andere chartermaatschappijen. Vanuit Griekenland, naast Aegean Luchtvaartmaatschappij en Olympische luchtvaartmaatschappijenis het de moeite waard om de dienstregelingen en routes te bekijken die worden aangeboden door Sky express. Wat je ook kiest, vergeet niet dat vroeg boeken aanzienlijke kostenbesparingen kan opleveren.

Reizen op het eiland

Op Kreta zijn er twee belangrijke busmaatschappijen. Deze busroutes dragen de naam KTEL, zowel op het eiland Kreta als elders in Griekenland. Voor het midden en oosten van het eiland heb je KTEL Heraklion-Lasithi nodig en voor het westen KTEL Chania-Rethymnon. De twee maatschappijen werken samen, dus je kunt een kaartje kopen dat hun nominale grens overschrijdt. Kaartjes kunnen worden gekocht bij de belangrijkste busterminals of kiosken en soms na het instappen in de bus.

The websites of the companies provide the main and local timetables but it is always worth checking by phone, especially for the shorter and less popular routes that have only one or two buses a day. Inevitably the buses cannot cover every village, landmark and beach on the island! So for that sort of flexibility and in order to be able to explore fully with no time constraints, it is better to travel by rented car. In all major cities – and some villages – you will encounter car-rental companies for your needs. Of course, tourist resorts and airports also offer various autoverhuur opties.
