Kyani Akti is a fairly long and sandy beach with shallow waters. It is situated 18 km east of Chania and spans the area between the settlements of Kalives and Kalami. Parts of it are organized with sunbeds and umbrellas, offered by various beach bars owned by the hotels on the beachfront. It is a lively area full of canteens and restaurants, with easy access to snacks, coffee or food. There are also plenty of water sport activities on offer. In the middle section of the beach, the water tends to be colder. This is where the river Koilaris flows into the sea, dropping the temperature considerably with its refreshing waters that come straight from the White Mountains.

The beach of Almyrida is less than 10 km away and is another popular seaside resort for visitors.  It has two small sandy beaches separated by a small peninsula. The water is clean, calm and shallow, making it perfect for families with children. Almyrida is known for its fresh fish tavernas located right on the beach. There are various other tourist activities in the area; 5 km inland we find the Archaeological Site of Aptera. It was one of the most significant and powerful city-states of Western Crete and of considerable size, indicative of the power it had during its pinnacle. In the village of Gavalochori, we find the Historical and Folklore Museum that highlights the local architecture and Cretan traditions. There are seven main exhibit rooms in the museum. Each one is focused in a different area of life, starting with the Arched House, Silk, Pottery, Lace-making, Masonry, Stone Carving and finishing with Church and Woodcarving. Another popular attraction in the area is the charming Lake of Kournas, home to a large number of birds and animals and with countless spots to sit and relax or enjoy a meal. Other beaches worth visiting in the area are Ombros Gialos, Kera Beach, Kalives, Kalyvaki and Georgioupoli. This area of Crete island is great for families with children and known for its relaxed and laid back vibe while still being well connected to the main cities.
