Kalyves Beach
Located 19 km from Chania, Kalyves is a coastal village and a popular holiday destination for domestic and international visitors. The beach in front of the village, from which it takes its name, is a quiet bay with very shallow water, sand and a few trees to protect visitors from the sun. It is also fully organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas, and access to toilets. Various restaurants, cafes and bars are found in the area to provide snacks, and drinks during the day but also until late at night. The area including Kalyves is ideal for families with small children. Hotels, shops, and restaurants line the waterfront. Next to Kalyves, we find Kyani Akti and then Kalami beach.
The beach of Almyrida is less than 10 km away and is another popular seaside resort for visitors. It has two small sandy beaches separated by a small peninsula. The water is clean, calm and shallow, making it perfect for families with children. Almyrida is known for its fresh fish tavernas located right on the beach. There are various other tourist activities in the area. Only 5 km inland we find the Archaeological Site of Aptera. It was one of the most significant and powerful city-states of Western Crete and its considerable size is indicative of the power it had during its pinnacle. In the village of Gavalochori, 8 km to the east, we find the Historical and Folklore Museum that highlights local architecture and Cretan traditions. There are seven main exhibit rooms in the museum. Each one is focused in a different area of life, starting with the Arched House, Silk, Pottery, Lace-making, Masonry, Stone Carving and finishing with Church and Woodcarving.
