Almyrida is a seaside resort, located 23 km from Chania. It has two small sandy beaches separated by a small peninsula. The water is clean, calm and shallow, making it perfect for families with children. There are also facilities for water sports and other tourist attractions. You will have the opportunity to enjoy fresh fish at the tavernas on the beach, after of course visiting the ruins of the Christian basilica excavated at the entrance of the village and admiring its wonderful mosaics. It is also worth visiting the nearby village of Plaka with its traditional architecture and picturesque streets.

To reach Almyrida, drive west and take the exit towards Kalyves. While it has witnessed developments in the area of tourism, it is a relatively quiet settlement, most suited to families with children and visitors looking for a relaxing Cretan experience. The beaches are well protected and the waters are almost always calm, suitable for children with young children. You can also reach Almyrida (and nearby Plaka) with public transport from the city of Chania. The small island inside the bay, Karga, is a popular location for diving excursions and a natural bird habitat. To the east, we meet the beaches of Keras, Kalives and Glaros, respectively.

From Almyrida you can also set out to explore nearby villages, like Vamos, the historical town of Apokoronas and one of the most important agrotourism centres of Crete. Traditional architecture prevails here and the tavernas are excellent. About 4 km from the beach, we find the Historical and Folklore Museum of Gavalochori that highlights local architecture and Cretan traditions. There are seven main exhibit rooms in the museum. Each one is focused in a different area of life, starting with the Arched House, Silk, Pottery, Lace-making, Masonry, Stone Carving and finishing with Church and Woodcarving. Another popular attraction in the area is the charming Lake of Kournas, home to a large number of birds and animals and with countless spots to sit and relax or enjoy a meal.

Almyrida is a lively and relaxing village for summer holidays that has a lot to offer to visitors.
