Sfinari

The beach of Sfinari in the prefecture of Chania is a tranquil spot, ideal for relaxing family holidays. In addition to its beach, the village is known for its fish taverns. It is located at a distance of 60 km from Chania and 32 km from Kastelli Kissamos. It is the perfect choice for those keen on diving, because of its magnificent and lively sea-bed. On the surface, it is far quieter, with calm waters and soft sand or pebbles. A few tamarisks frame the bay and allow visitors to rest under their natural shade. Most visitors skip Sfinari on their way to more popular beaches. Regardless, Sfinari is well organized, with umbrellas, sunbeds and showers. The village of Sfinari has a few rooms for rent and lots of traditional Greek tavernas, specializing in fresh fish.

Sfinari & Platanakia Beach

In the area, we find the gorge of Topolia that crosses through the E4 European long-distance path. It makes for an excellent short excursion and can also be visited on the way to other attractions in the area like the monastery of Panagia Chrysoskalitissa and Elafonisi lagoon.

Platanakia

After Sfinari, Platanakia beach is the next one we meet on our way south. It is a small beach, isolated at the mouth of a small gorge, in a sheltered location and surrounded by high cliffs. Platanakia translates to “little plane trees” and is perfect for diving enthusiasts, with ample natural shade and crystal clear blue waters. Most rental cars will struggle considerably to follow the challenging dirt-road from the village of Kampos, so a 4×4 car is highly recommended. Alternatively, you can get there through the gorge that starts from the village of Platanakia. The hike takes about 2 hours. Because of the remoteness of the beach, do not expect to find any amenities. It is a good idea to bring extra food, water and supplies. Continuing south, we find the beaches of Gylisma or Afratolakkoi

Going south once more, next to be found is the beach of Gylisma or Afratolakkoi and then Xotikospilio. The distance from Sfinari to the monastery of Panagia Chrisoskalitissa is only 30 km but takes over an hour due to the windy roads.
