Geschiedenis van Sitia - Oost-Kreta<\/p>"},"content":{"rendered":"

Sitia<\/a> ontleende zijn naam aan de oude stad Itia<\/em> of Itida<\/em> die iets ten oosten van de huidige stad lag. Itia<\/em> werd bewoond sinds de bronstijd en kende een grote bloei in de 2e eeuw na Christus. Het wordt ook beschouwd als het thuisland van Myson<\/em>Een van de zeven wijzen uit de oudheid.

De stad werd bewoond door de Eteocrieten<\/em>dat wil zeggen, de \"oude? Kretenzers. Dit waren de Mino\u00efers die ontsnapten naar de bergachtige en afgelegen gebieden van Kreta, na de val van de Mino\u00efsche beschaving en de bezetting van het eiland door de Dorians<\/em>. De ontwikkeling is echter te danken aan de Praisi\u00ebrs<\/em>van de oude stad Praisos<\/a>die hier hun toevlucht zochten na de verwoesting door Ierapetra<\/a>.<\/p>

\"Sitia<\/p>

Tijdens de eerste Byzantijnse jaren werd de stad verplaatst naar de huidige locatie en de haven van Sitia<\/em> belangrijke commerci\u00eble activiteit kende. Gedurende de jaren van de Venetiaanse overheersing werd Sitia gekarakteriseerd als ?maximum statum et lumen ejiusdem insulae<\/em>Dit betekent \"maximaal station en licht van het eiland\". In deze tijd werden er verschillende kastelen en forten gebouwd; de kazernes zijn een van de bepalende kenmerken die de stad domineren en die tot op de dag van vandaag bewaard zijn gebleven. Sitia<\/em> leed enorme schade tijdens de aardbeving van 1508 en werd dertig jaar later, in 1538, volledig verwoest door de piraten van Barbarossa. Uiteindelijk verlieten de inwoners het in 1651 en vernietigden de Venetianen de muren en belangrijkste gebouwen om zich niet over te geven aan de Turken.<\/p>

De stad werd in 1870 herbouwd door Hussein Avni Pasha, die de hoofdstad van zijn provincie hierheen verplaatste en het werd omgedoopt tot ?Avnie<\/em>ter ere van hem. De lokale bevolking bleef het echter Sitia<\/em> en zo is de naam tot op de dag van vandaag gebleven.<\/p>

Als het gaat om de moderne geschiedenis, Sitia<\/em> werd in 1941 bezet door de Italianen die in de stad bleven tot de komst van het Duitse leger. De inwoners van Sitia<\/em> hadden een actieve rol in het verzet tegen de Duitse bezetters. Een van de belangrijkste centra was de klooster van Toplou<\/a>dat onderdak bood aan de rebellen en ook een radiostation beheerde voor communicatiedoeleinden. Het klooster ligt slechts 15 km ten oosten van Sitia<\/em> en is een bezoek waard. Enkele andere plaatsen die het ontdekken waard zijn Palaikastro<\/em>, Zakros<\/em> en de prachtige palm forest strand van Vai<\/a>.<\/p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
