Museum of the Battle of Crete

The museum of the Battle of Crete is a small but important museum of the city of Heraklion. It was created to accommodate an interesting collection of exhibits related to the Battle of Crete, a monumental act of resistance of the Cretans against the invasion of the German army of Hitler, in May 1941.

In the museum one can see representative objects from that era (arms, uniforms, military paraphernalia), as well as bibliographical and photographical documents (archives, publications). All exhibits are related to the period that began with the seizure of the island by the Germans (1941) and ended with the signing of surrender of the joined German and Italian forces to the Greek and English officers, in 1945, which ended World War II.

The museum also serves as a research centre, where important work is done on the enrichment of the collections and the study of the archives.
