The museum has been open to the public since 1996, on the second floor of the regional office of the General Chemical State Laboratory.
It is a representation of the first public chemical laboratory of Greece, which was founded in 1900 on the initiative of Ioannis Vamvakas.
One can visit the library, where old chemistry books are kept, the office of Professor Vamvakas with his portrait, and also see the Decree No.143 of 1900 of the Cretan State, signed by Prince George, High Commissioner of Crete.
The museum suffered extensive damage during World War II but whatever managed to be saved is kept with special care.
