The Archaeological Museum is located much in the center of Heraklion: it is one of the most important Archaeological Museums of the world, thanks to its unrivalled collection of artifacts from the Bronze-age Minoan culture – the first of note on what is now European soil.
The Natural History Museum of Crete functions as part of the School of Sciences of the University of Crete; despite its title, it does not only present the natural wealth of the island, but also of the rest of Greece and of the Eastern Mediterranean.
The most complete historical museum of Crete is to be found in Heraklion, and it houses exhibits dating from the Early Christian years up until the 20th century.
The museum of Icons & Relics of the Holy Archbishopric of Crete is located in the city centre and is housed in Saint Catherine’s church, near to Saint Minas Cathedral. It dates back to the 15th century and used to be the church of a monastery during the Venetian period.
The Venetian basilica of Saint Mark houses the Municipal Gallery of Heraklion, where permanent collections and temporary art exhibitions can be seen.
The museum of the Battle of Crete is a small but important museum of the city of Heraklion. It was created to accommodate an interesting collection of exhibits related to the Battle of Crete, a monumental act of resistance of the Cretans against the invasion of the German army of Hitler, in May 1941.
