A second-generation family business that started their wine-making activities in 1966, it is based in the Peza wine-making zone: one of the most important in Crete. They have a private vineyard of 35 acres, lying at around an altitude of 550 m.
Since the mid 1980s they have specialized in rare local varieties: they managed to recover the almost extinct varieties of “Dafni” and “Plyto”. They also grow and cultivate the varieties of Vilana, Moshato White and French Sauvignon blanc. As far as the red varieties are concerned the local ones of Kotsifali, Madilari and Moshato are combined with international varieties Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Other innovative productions consist of an aged red wine from only Madilari grapes, a variety that had always been blended previously in Crete. Finally the Lyrarakis family was the first in the late 1990s to mix the local Kotsifali with the international Syrah, so creating an unusually exciting red blend.
Lyrarakis wineshave been many times recipients of nominations and awards; their exports cover Europe, North America and Canada. Guided tours take place in the vineyards and cellars; a wine-tasting of 5 finest wines is accompanied by local cheese. The winery also offers a lunch and dinner service on request, featuring the local cuisine – and obviously their wines!
