The gorges of Rethymnon Prefecture are very important from an ornithological point of view, due to the fact that many rare raptors seek shelter in them, among the multitude of bird species that nest here. These gorges have a wild beauty, and streams flow through them.
This is one of the most beautiful gorges of Crete. Magnificent vertical cliffs can be seen on both its sides, reaching as high as 300 metres at several places. It is 2,5 kilometres long and the elevation difference between the entrance point and the outlet is 150 metres.

The gorge of Kotsifos is smaller than the neighbouring Kourtaliotiko gorge, but equally impressive. It is located between the peaks of Kouroupa (984 m) and Krioneritis (1.312 m). It is 2 kilometres long and the elevation difference between the highest point of the route in the gorge and the outlet is 390 metres.

The spectacular, verdant gorge of Patsos is located in the inland area of the Prefecture of Rethymnon, at the north-west part of the Municipality of Amari. It is a beautiful gorge with a small river running through it. It has been developed for the visitors’ ease of walking, by the Forest Authority.It is 2 kilometres long and the walk requires 2 hours in total,including the return to the entrance. The elevation difference between the highest point and the entrance reaches 240 metres.
