Here, the E4 runs from the Timios Stavros (Holy Cross) peak of Psiloritis down to the region of Akolyta – at which point it divides. The eastern branch takes one to the Nida plateau and south to Kamares; it runs on across the south and east flanks of Psiloriti into the hinterlands of the Prefecture.
The natural environment varies: from the forest at Rouva, a rare sight, and the impressive gorge of Aghios Nikolaos, to the olive-groves and vineyards of the Pediada region. The trail connects historic villages, old monasteries, unique natural features and cultural points of interest worth a visit.
Do not forget to read the Helpful Suggestions for the E4 route in Crete. For the best sightseeing though, use the menu ‘The E4 Routes’ at the left, arranged by Prefecture, or search the Smart Search faculty.
