The area of Vathianos Kampos is 15 km east of Heraklion. This expanse of level land takes its name from the Vatheiano River, which flows through the plain in the winter to the beach. The two settlements here of Epano/Upper and Kato/Lower Vatheia lie close to each other.

Here too is a beach that ranks as one of the best known and most popular on the north coast of this prefecture. That part close to the hotel Arena has taken its name: the west part is organized with umbrellas, sunbeds, showers, changing rooms and many water-sports – and a lifeguard. On the beach is a bar, and a court for beach volley-ball.

In contrast the east sector is more suited to those desirous of relaxation – it remains completely natural, without umbrellas or sunbeds.

The beach is sandy, with rocky outcrops at its edges, and is open to the strong northerly winds. Access is by road, along the OLD National roadway from Heraklion east to Aghios Nikolaos, but a regular daily bus service also will get you there (the Malia/Aghios Nikolaos route, on to Ierapetra or Siteia).

Apart from the Arena beach, as one goes east out of the plain, you will encounter some other smaller sandy beaches. To reach these, one must turn left off the old National road down one of the side-roads – the beaches are not visible from the road. Hotels and similar infill the space between the national road and the seashore.

On the Vatheiano Kampos and all around there operate many large hotel complexes, and rentable rooms and apartments; many shops, tavernas, restaurants, cafeterias and bars  are to be found.

Carrying on east still along the north coast of this prefecture, we come soon to Kokkini Hani, where are two beautiful and well-liked beaches.
