Polyrizos Beach – Rodakino

Polyrizos beach is located on the southern coast of Crete island in the prefecture of Rethymno, next to the settlement of Korakas. Set amidst olive groves that run on down to the sea, this is a sandy beach, with shallow crystal water, rocky cliffs and caves. The beach is semi-organized with umbrellas and sunbeds available to visitors. Like most beaches on the south coast, it is open to the southerly winds. East of Polyrizos, the road passes a sand-dune and small coves on its way to the beach of Korakas.

The two main villages nearby are Kato and Ano Rodakino;  the villages are framed by the mountainous backdrop of the peak of Krioneritis mountain to the north and the vast and long beach of Korakas. Due to the remote nature of the area, this part is unknown to most visitors. The E4 European long-distance trail also runs through the area;  it starts at Kato Rodakino and travels north towards the village of Alones. The canyon of Rodakino to the north of the villages is popular with canyoners and is only accessible with proper equipment. In addition to hiking activities, the ever-growing in popularity town of Frangokastello is located 8 km to the west. Here, you can dine and relax in one of the seaside tavernas while looking out towards the Libyan Sea with its golden sand and the Venetian fortress framing the scene. The southern coast of Crete is a true paradise for nature and beach lovers. Other beaches in the area are Agia Marina, Rodakino, Peristeres, Korakas and Klimata. To reach the area from Rethymno, it takes about an hour and a half (55 km) and will take you through the beautiful village of Argiroupoli and its water springs. A slightly shorter route will take you through the village of Armeni and various archaeological sites. The area is popular with visitors that wish to avoid the busy crowded spots and relax among the lush vegetation and quiet sandy bays. There are various accommodation options available in Polyrizos and the nearby settlements as well as excellent fresh fish tavernas, cafes and a few shops.
